"I am hopeful that my work will arouse emotions in my viewers of joy, peace and gratitude for all the beauty, sunshine, oceans and the many marvelous things that make up our environment."

At an early age, Richard developed a love of nature, which he then translated into art. Inspired by the rural Wisconsin farming community in which he was raised, drawing and painting came naturally to him. His next home was the Southern California coastline where his family moved when he was 13. A love of art and architecture would then dominate his years of higher education. After attending Cal State University at Long Beach as an engineering major, he moved on to East Los Angeles College as an art major and then to architecture major at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Close to graduating in 1962, Richard left school and began to apply his skills. Over the next several years, he was employed by several Orange County, California, architectural firms. Obtaining his California State Architects License in 1969, he entered private practice the next year. The following 22 years were spent designing custom homes, commercial and public buildings, industrial parks, and land planning.

Richard received a blessing in disguise when in 1992 the construction market came to a standstill and he decided to close his business. Now he had plenty of time to pursue his love of watercolor painting. Attending watercolor workshops and going out with a group of plein air artists weekly gave him the focus he needed to begin to create his works of art. The years of building design had developed his observation and presentation skills. He now added to that his love of nature, the inspiring beauty of the California coast, and the spiritual insight maturity had given him. It was not long before he incorporated oils into his repertoire of media.

Art is now Richard's full time career. The Laguna Plein Air Painters Association has made him a signature member. He is also a member of the Catalina Art Association and exhibits in the Casino Gallery on Catalina Island. His works may also be seen in the desert at the Studio on the grounds of the La Quinta Resort on Eisenhower Drive in La Quinta. People from all around the world have purchased his artwork and enjoy the moments in time he has so magnificently captured.
